Meditation is really popular these days and for good reason too. It has a huge range of benefits, and if you’ve decided to discover these yourself, good choice! However, learning to meditate can be overwhelming for a beginner, as there are so many methods that you can try. In this article we’ll take a look at some simple tips on how to meditate for beginners.

First of all, don’t worry about getting it right, or learning to meditate perfectly. As noted earlier, there are lots of different meditation methods out there, and all can be of great value. The best thing to do is to experiment a bit and see what works well for you. However, if you’re just starting off, it’s also valuable to keep things simple, and not get too caught up in complex techniques; remember that these aren’t really necessary to experience the main benefits of meditation. To begin with, try these simple steps:

1. Wear comfortable clothing

Firstly, make sure you’re wearing loose comfortable clothing. Don’t wear anything tight or restrictive, or anything else that will cause you discomfort. You want to focus on what’s going on in your mind when meditating, not be distracted by physical issues.

2. Find a quiet place to sit or lie down

Next, you need to find a meditation location that’s quiet and you won’t be disturbed. Many people like to meditate by lying down on the bed, or sitting in a comfortable chair. You can sit cross-legged on the floor or use the lotus position if you want to, but you don’t have to. Again, the key is to be comfortable here, so you can allow your body to relax and lose awareness of it.

3. Close your eyes and breathe deeply

Having got yourself comfortable, close your eyes and begin to breathe deeply. If you’re a shallow breather like most people are, you’ll probably find that this takes some conscious focus. Breathing deeply will also slow your breathing rate down, which is important when it comes to relaxing mentally.

4. Try to focus your attention on your breath

As you breathe, keep your attention on your breath as it enters and leaves your body. Breathing meditation of this type is one of the simplest and most effective ways to meditate, and is often recommended for beginners. You can keep your point of attention at your nostrils, and observe the breath entering and leaving your nose. If your mind wanders (as it probably will) just gently bring your attention back to your breathing.

Continue doing this for as long as you want – if you’re just starting off, a 10 or 15 minute meditation session will probably be sufficient, but of course you can carry on for longer if you want to.

5. Repeat daily

The next day, return to your meditation spot and repeat. Meditation is of less value if you only do it once in awhile; the real benefits come once you establish a consistent routine. With practice, you’ll also find it easier to relax properly and focus your mind.

If you have a lot of trouble keeping your attention focused on your breath, don’t despair. Most new meditators have trouble in this area, and if you want to improve your focusing skills, you can improve your meditation practice by listening to a brainwave entrainment recording.

These recordings contain sounds of specific frequencies which have a direct effect on your brain, causing your brainwave output to slow down, and your mind to achieve a level of deep relaxation. The most common type of brainwave entrainment recording is binaural beats, although monaural beats or isochronic tones may also be used, and all three types of very effective.

I use all three myself, and strongly recommend brainwave entrainment to anyone who wants to make the most of their meditation sessions. It’s especially effective for beginners, as it can help you to achieve levels of relaxation and focus that often only come after months or even years of practice with traditional techniques.

If you decide to explore the power of brainwave entrainment meditation for yourself, I suggest checking out the ‘Meditation’ recording from The Unexplainable Store. I love their products as they’re of great quality, and all are fully guaranteed. There are also free downloads available, so check those out when you’re over there too.

It’s always the same when you start anything new – the age old question crops up of where to begin. Sometimes you get the option of beginners classes, which is a good indication that you’re in the same group as other novices. But if you’re looking for something like the best meditation for beginners, it’s not always as easy to know where you should start. Here are some methods that many beginners find the best way to start meditating on a daily basis.

Breathing meditation

This can be something you do on an “ad hoc” basis or you may prefer to use a pre-recorded session that will guide you through the whole procedure, start to finish. Whenever I’m asked where to start with this, I suggest that a recorded session – usually available as an MP3 download – is the best place. Sure, it may cost a few dollars, but because the complete session is guided start to finish, you know that you’re doing it right. And whether or not they’re meditating correctly is probably the most frequently asked question amongst meditation novices.

Binaural beats meditation

In many ways this is even easier than going through a breathing meditation. Purists may argue that this isn’t a real way to meditate but there is a lot of evidence that the state of relaxation reached with a binaural beats meditation is often deeper that many experienced meditators will ever reach. A binaural beats meditation is probably the laziest method you can use. It involves nothing more than sitting or laying down and playing a track to yourself, usually through headphones.

The mysterious sounding beats take care of everything else. Essentially, they bring the level of brainwave activity down to the same as you would experience if you’d had years of practice as a Zen monk. Research has been going on in this area for several decades and various tests have been done to make sure that the experience a deep level of meditation every time. There are a variety of different programs on the market that will help you to do this. Most of them will gradually take you down to deeper and deeper levels of meditation over a period of weeks or months, although you’re totally in control and can use this at your own pace.

Guided meditation

These are similar in some respects to the breathing meditation but quite often will focus on a particular area that you want to improve in your life. Guided meditations are often used to help the body to heal itself. As you know, much of the healing process is controlled by your body anyway. Doctors can help by, for instance, putting your leg in plaster while it heals but just how much they do depends on the problem you’re experiencing. A guided meditation can help the healing process by firstly helping you to relax and secondly by helping your body’s self defense mechanisms to operate at their best. Many people find that using this kind of meditation is an excellent way to help their recuperation.

Reiki practitioners know that choosing the appropriate kind of music to use in meditation sessions is extremely important. The benefits of Reiki meditation music are two-fold: it can be especially soothing to the patient and healer, and it can bring the energies of both together to make sessions especially rewarding.

Essentially, Reiki meditation music should have peaceful qualities that will resonate in the listener’s soul. You should avoid distracting music that will interfere with the focus of both patient and healer as the attuning process is underway. Of course, we all have favorite songs that make us want to sing and dance, and that’s great. But that type of music isn’t useful for meditation purposes.

Certain sounds are commonly associated with Reiki meditation music, such as the flute and other wind instruments, gongs, and chimes. Some people have found that piano music aids in the healing process. That said, the soothing sounds produced by wind instruments have long been used in Reiki sessions to bring together the energies of the healer and patient.

Another good form of Reiki meditation music comes from the sounds from nature. Among the most effective nature sounds are those of water, either bubbling through brooks or splashing down waterfalls, and falling rain. You can also try songs of animals and birds, and even wind blowing. This type of peaceful music is available in many places. In bookstores that have sections on alternative medicine or new age healing, you may find a sizable selection of CDs will be useful to you in your meditation sessions.

People who are trying meditation to alleviate excess stress often have the same problem – they discover that their mind wanders back to the problems they’re trying to forget by practicing meditation! It’s vitally important for people in this category to select the correct Reiki meditation music. Reiki meditation music should be able to let the patient relax to the point that worries are temporarily forgotten, which in turn heals the overwrought physical self and soothes the troubled mind.

Find out more about the Reiki meditation. Acquire wealth of information on how meditation works, benefits and many other informative tips on self improvements. Also, look into the various types of meditation music that are available for you.

If you have never meditated and have decided to give it a try for stress relief or peace of mind, there are a few rules need to know.

• Do it every day at the same time

• Find a quiet place where you can be comfortable and not disturbed for fifteen minutes

• Begin with your breathing; breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth for seven repetitions. Make each breath a little deeper than the one before.

• Stretch your body to relax

• Meditation is a process of going within. You have to concentrate on your thoughts.

• As you begin your meditation find your “special place” to use in your meditations. It can be a place you remember fondly or some place you have always wanted to go. It can even be a cloud.

• Close your eyes and picture yourself in your special place. Allow yourself to rise above your physical body and to enter this special place. As you feel yourself leaving your body, relax. Let your mind move away from the rest of your body as you relax. You can feel the relaxation as it flows through your body from the top of your head to the soles of your feet and out the ends of your toes. You will find yourself completely relaxed as you repeat the process five to seven times.

• Remove yourself from the everyday worries and traumas and focus on yourself and your well being.

As a beginner to meditation you will want to purchase one or two books to read on the process so that you will be able to see exactly what you can hope to accomplish. If you have access to tapes or CD’s made for meditation, purchase one that you can use to aid your meditation. Some people like to use a scented candle to aid in meditation.

Meditation is meant to give you a feeling of peace inside. It also gives you a feeling of relaxation and can be used in the middle of the day as rejuvenation. If you get upset or angry, meditation can help you get over it. Make certain you sit up straight with your back aligned with your spine. It is better not to meditate when you are sleepy. Meditation, when done right, promotes mental clarity.

People who meditate sleep better, are in better health, are calmer and have less stress in their lives, and are able to focus better. Some people just can’t seem to sit still long enough to meditate so they adapt. They go for a walk or swim while their mind is going through the meditative motions.

In order to do this and have it become a full meditation, you need to coordinate your breathing so that you inhale and exhale in step with your walking or your swimming. While you are meditating you will find yourself reconnecting with your inner self and receiving divine guidance.

If you are looking for an alternative means of healing to benefit your physical body and your soul, healing meditation is the answer. It is not only healing, but is a personal journey that connects your heart and your mind, and meditation strategies will be able to help you prevent sickness or deal with terminating illnesses with peace of mind.

Cancer patients are those that can benefit the most from healing meditation. It provides them with a way to see things with a renewed sense of peace and fulfillment despite the disease they may have, in an all-natural way that doesn’t involve costly medication, drugs, or chemicals to add on to their existing treatments. There are significant benefits of the use of healing meditation for cancer patients, which is why it has grown in popularity as a tool to assist in healing and development of patients:

• Healing meditation technique helps to develop the positive attitude for cancer patients that will help them cope with their disease. It also greatly helps to assist in healing, which is why meditation is taught in cancer clinics around the world. It works great together with medical treatment to help improve the lives of cancer patients.

• Because of the renewed sense of peacefulness and calmness that meditation brings, cancer patients can still enjoy a better quality of life. They will be able to smile and laugh more even at the simplest things, instead of feeling depressed.

• Through the regular practice of healing meditation, patients will be able to focus their energies on positive aspects of their life through better breathing and a more relaxed state of mind. Many cancer pacents tend to be depressed with their diagnosis and forget all the other joyful aspects of life, and we know that this kind of attitude may be inevitable but will also not speed up healing. Healing meditation provides them with the tools to be able to overcome depression.

• Studies have also shown that due to the practice of healing meditation by cancer patients, these bring about physiological changes that may actually reduce the size and growth of tumors. It has also been reported that those who practice meditation have a higher survival rate than those who do not. However, it should be noted that healing meditation should not be seen as curative therapy for anything but rather complementary treatment for cancer patients.

• There are no side effects to healing meditation for cancer patients. However, ensure that a licensed professional is the only one you will entrust any cancer patient to. Series of breathing techniques and meditation exercises that teach one to love more and open their mind is the best thing you can give to any cancer patient.

Because of the significant growing evidence of healing meditation in the lives of cancer patients, more and more doctors today are prescribing it as complementary therapy for their patients. As a matter of fact, they even recommend it to other patients, especially those who are suffering from depression and stress.

Mindfulness Meditation for a busy world

Mindfulness Meditation is a relaxation discipline that is particularly appropriate for modern day living. In a world where the demands are greater than they were before, where speed and efficiency seems to be demanded, mental stress can accumulate and lead to physical illness. There are so many illnesses that stress can contribute to such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBD (Inflamed Bowel Disorder), Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcers, Hypertension and Panic Attacks to name but a few.

Everybody in this age of the internet expects quicker service and wants more immediate results. Time is becoming such a precious commodity that many people wake up one to realise that dreams and aspirations haven’t been started never mind accomplished. Time has rushed by and they can feel like they are in a rut. As is the case with many enlightened practices, mindfulness meditation has been around for thousands of years and has been a eastern practice. The western world is now catching up with the eastern worlds lead in healthy and balanced living.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) now includes mindfulness meditation as a way of helping change a person’s negative thinking or cognitive processing.

Mental Relaxation is Important too

We all know that regular physical exercise is important to help maintain muscles and to release the feel-good hormones known as endorphins. Exercise helps release stress and promotes good sleep patterns. However physical exercise alone is only a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Mental relaxation that encourages balanced and healthy cognitions (thinking and perceiving) is a vital part of our coping skills. Whilst any form of mental relaxation is to be encouraged, mindfulness meditation is proving to be both fast and effective at making lasting positive changes.

Self Hypnosis and Meditation

Steven Harold, the London Hypnotherapist has been practising meditation for over 30 years. As a trained hypnotherapist he also used self hypnosis. Through years of practice and training his clients he has formed a unique blend of the most effective elements of mindfulness meditation and self hypnosis.

At his London hypnotherapy practice, Steven provides a course that teaches his clients mindfulness meditation and self hypnosis that can be learnt in only one hypnotherapy session. This unique blend of east meets west, or mindfulness meditation and self hypnosis takes just 5 minutes of daily practice to gain immediate benefits. In essence it’s a real life changer and can benefit anyone no matter how busy their professional and personal commitments are.

Zen is growing in popularity in the West and the same holds true for meditation, but what is the heart of zen? That’s a tricky question, isn’t it?

I think most of us agree that it can’t be Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance or zen influenced interior design, no matter how inspiring it may be. There must be more to it.

Zen took root in Japan well over a thousand years ago and whatever you find in department stores today are merely expressions of zen culture. Anyone who has lived and meditated in zen monasteries have a different idea of what zen is and isn’t.

Let’s take a look from inside…

Meditating In Zen Temples

Zen temples maintain a rather high level of discipline during meditation practice. The meditators sit in straight lines and face the walls while doing their best to keep their backs perfectly upright and the chins slightly tucked in.

The body posture plays a central role in zen meditation, because an erect spine allows mental energy to flow more naturally than one that isn’t straight. And meditation does generate a lot of mental energy which in turn makes it easier to mediate.

In other Buddhist traditions such as in Sri Lanka or Tibet there is less of an emphasis on sitting in straight lines and cultivating the perfect meditation posture.

Anyhow, whenever a meditator in a zen temple takes on a sloppy posture she will get smacked with a wooden stick on the left and right shoulders. To an outsider it may look like downright punishment while meditators view it as a form of encouragement.

Zazen

In zen, meditation is called zazen which is practiced in two separate modes, namely are sitting and walking.

That is not unique to zazen, though. It’s been known for thousands of years that sitting meditation boosts concentration while walking meditation generates a lot of mental energy.

By alternating between the two, the meditator can maintain a sound balance between the level of mental energy and concentration, which makes it easier to meditate. One could say that mental energy fuels concentration.

So, whenever you feel that your meditation is not flowing or you find it hard to concentrate, change from sitting to walking meditation. In addition, alternating between the two modes eases any physical aches and pains.

In zazen, the walking interval may only be 15-minutes long followed by 45 minutes of sitting meditation. In other Buddhist traditions there is generally a 50/50 split between sitting and walking meditation.

One could say that zen has an emphasis on sitting meditation which results in more concentration.

So far, we haven’t touched on what I consider the power of zen meditation. The above points out certain differences between zen and other Buddhist traditions, but let’s move on to the heart of the matter.

Zen Group Practice

There is a definite emphasis on group practice in zen that you don’t find in other Buddhist traditions. Both sitting and walking meditation are done in a group.

By practicing sitting and walking meditation in a group, strong mental energy and concentration build up. That takes the practice to a higher level and also makes it easier to meditate.

In zen temples the meditators also sit close together in order to keep the energy concentrated, which I’ve never seen in other Buddhist traditions.

The beauty of meditating with others, especially experienced meditators, is that their presence boost your practice! So, don’t only meditate alone at home, but take advantage of the benefits of group practice.

Zen Walking Meditation

Walking meditation in zen is a group practice that is done inside the temple. All the meditators walk with their backs upright in a clockwise circle, which means you have to adjust your pace to the meditators in front and behind you. That comes naturally with practice, though.

Again, walking meditation in a group is done to build up as much mental energy a possible, which in turn fuels concentration.

In other Buddhist traditions walking meditation is not a group practice and is usually practiced outdoors, ideally in nature.

If you’re new to walking meditation, I suggest that you give it a try. The combination of sitting and walking meditation is superior to sitting meditation alone. Your meditation practice would benefit greatly, by combining the two.

In conclusion, I would say that zen meditation has a strong emphasis on group practice. That’s why I like zen, aside from the clear-cut simplicity of zen culture.

Good luck!

Axel Gjertsen is a former Buddhist monk who lives in Thailand. He runs axel g which is a personal development site with a focus on meditation.

There are a lot of people out there that seek out meditation as a form of stress relief in their life. Who doesn’t want to find peace and clarity after all? Finding it can be a lot simpler when you use meditation methods. It is also far healthier than turning to alcohol and drugs as a form of relief.

Beginners to meditation may find that there are some very easy techniques to learn in the beginning that won’t require the help of a costly professional to mater. These methods are comprised of very basic actions such as controlled breathing or listening to music to relax yourself.

After you have learned how to do these things you can then progress on to more advanced methods as you travel further on your path. Even at the advanced stage, however, you will find that these basics are still very important.

Focused breathing is probably one of the easiest techniques you can learn. You won’t have to worry about positioning either as long as you get get yourself comfortable, no matter what position that may be. You will also need to breath through your nose and keep your eyes closed the entire time. Timed breathing will help you to find the relaxing state you need very quickly.

Guided meditation is another popular technique and just as easy to learn. You will be guided through the form of a Cd or other recording that has soft music or relaxing noise playing.

There will also be a voice over the sound which is your guide. This guide will give you detailed instruction about images to think about and how you should be focusing your breathing properly. When the recording ends you will have been guided to a relaxed state where you can let your stress dissipate.

Obviously this is only a couple of the many methods you can use even as a beginner that will help you with the stress in your life. They are basic but make up the foundation you need in order to progress properly and are reverted back to often. Thoroughly learn each method you choose to use if you want the most from the experience. It shouldn’t take long for you to discover that daily stress is much easier to handle when you have the tools to get rid of it at the end of each day. They can also be used at any time you are feeling overwhelmed so that you can focus yourself and return to the task at hand.

A Look at Meditation and How It’s Not All About Metaphysics By Dusty Alan

When one first takes a look at meditation, they often think of such things as metaphysics, or the new age movement. This is a wide stereotypical false assumption and couldn’t be further from the truth.

Meditation and Metaphysics

While it’s true that meditation is commonly associated with metaphysics and is a fantastic tool for raising consciousness, it’s also true that even those who have no interest whatsoever in metaphysical pursuits can benefit greatly from meditation. So, if the word “meditation bothers you that much, then try not to get caught up in the word itself. Substitute it with the words “deep relaxation”.

Meditation and Relaxation

If you aren’t currently spiritual and have no desire to be spiritual, you should approach meditation from a different perspective. For example, when you look at meditation, look at it for what it is. In it’s simplest form, meditation is a way for you to clear your thoughts and still your mind and body. It’s just a very deep form of relaxation that is great for reducing high levels of stress and clearing the clutter from your mind.

So, the important thing to take away from this is that when you meditate, you don’t have to focus on spiritual topics. Nor do you have to focus on love, oneness, energy etc. Instead, just make yourself comfortable, close your eyes and proceed with the following as an example.

Non-Spiritual Meditation Example:

* Make yourself comfortable and close your eyes. Then proceed by taking a few deep breaths, focusing on your breathing.

* Focus on relaxing each individual part of your body, feeling the parts go relaxed as you work your way down.

* Begin by visualizing yourself in an enjoyable environment such as a tropical beach or a lush beautiful meadow(as an example).

* Hold the image of your environment in your mind and proceed with affirmations such as: “I am calm and collected”, “stress just melts away”, “I am more relaxed with every breath I take”.

* Continue this meditation as long as you’d like, and when are ready to return, count from 1 to 10, and affirm to yourself that you are wide awake”.

Now is just a brief sample of the types of meditation, or if you prefer, deep relaxation sessions that you can practice without incorporating any type of spirituality into the session. Again, when you take a look at meditation, look at it for what it is, a way to deeply relax and calm your mind.

Take your time, practice, experiment, but most importantly, have fun!

Visit http://www.metaphysical-news-and-views.com for up to date information on many spiritual topics. It’s my hope that someday science and spirituality will eventually merge into one.

Remember the moments when you are so stress that you cannot think properly? Remember the moments when you let out your anger due to stressful situation? Remember the moments when you can feel the blood surging to your brain causing you a big headache? Do not let stress get controls of you but you should have control of it (because stress is controllable in the first place).

Take a step back and follow these simple instructions:

1) Take a deep breath. A really deep one.

When you could not take in anymore air. Just let it out.

2) Repeat it. Five times. Ten times. Up to you.

The point of this step is to allow sufficient amount of oxygen flushing into you brain to help you relax.

3) Look at the source(s) of the stress.

Is it because you have to complete an assignment and the deadline is just around the corner? Overdue bills, pressurizing boss, mountains of work to do or a hard-to-please mother-in-law? Think about it, where is that stress coming from and how come it makes you so stress. Some people are stress-prone and the stress might not have its source. After you find the source, reason around it. Is this stress source life-threatening?

Is it going to cost you a job? Sometimes, you might have different sources of stress, prioritize them, list it down one by one and see which one requires more attention. And you might notice some of the sources of your stress are of minute importance, throw them away and look at the big picture! Looking at the more importance stuff helps you to realise there is one or two things in life that required immediate attention and not 10 at the same time. In this way you reduce stress and can focus more on the immediate problem that need to be solved.

There are many ways to do meditation, you can sit down, close your eyes and think about nothing. Or you can meditate on breathing in and out (usually that is the first technique of learning meditation). Or you can walk slowly and observing your thought. Whatever ways. It works. For whatever purpose you want to achieve.

I have a stress-free life and it is not because I do not have stress but I simply manage it.

Marlin Lee is an expert meditator who has practiced meditation for more than 10 years. He is just 27 years old this year. Born with a mind that like to ask, find out answers, inquire those out of the worlds questions like: Where are we coming from? How does universe comes about? How do human come into existence? Do I have a dinosaur gene?

He finally found his answers by doing meditation. Deep deep meditation. More details at his site http://www.meditation-guides.info/
